Synopsis: The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting longer, and the fall chill is making its way in. Whether you prefer archery or firearms, fall also signifies the start of deer hunting seasons. There are many other animals to hunt and many other hunting seasons throughout the year, but none seem to take the country by storm quite like deer hunting does.

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting longer, and the fall chill is making its way in. Whether you prefer archery or firearms, fall also signifies the start of deer hunting seasons. There are many other animals to hunt and many other hunting seasons throughout the year, but none seem to take the country by storm quite like deer hunting does. Opening day is almost like a holiday in some areas. But like every holiday, it requires preparation. Before you go out hunting this year, take a look at your gear, it might be time to resupply some of your equipment. If you think your hunting gear is fine, take a look at our list of hunting necessities, you might see something you should add to your bag.

  • All Licenses, Tags, etc.- Wouldn't want to get to your stand realize you forgot you tags.
  • First Aid Kit- This should be on everyone's list. It doesn’t have to be a big kit, just large enough to handle minor injuries.
  • Game Cleaning Kit- This can be as fancy or primitive as you'd like, but you should have at least have a knife, saw, and gloves in it.
  • Hunting Knife- Large enough to defend yourself from an animal if necessary.
  • Water Bottle- Enough water to last you all day.
  • De-Scenter- Your choice on this depends on you, some people buy de-scenting sprays, others prefer mud.
  • Warm Clothes- You don't know how cold it will get while your out hunting.
  • Orange Vest and Hat- The rules for these vary by state, so look up your state laws before heading out.
  • Binoculars- If you are rifle hunting your scope might suffice.
  • Rain Jacket- Nothing worse than getting wet.
  • Flashlight- No matter how good your eyes are, it'll help while tracking down your game at night.
  • Extra Batteries- Wouldn't want to be stranded in the dark, would you?
  • Extra Ammunition- Whether it's arrows or shells, you'll be happy you grabbed an extra one if you miss.
  • Map and Compass- Wouldn't want to lose your way.
  • Toilet Paper- This goes without saying.

Now, you can go a lot bigger than what I said here, but this is a good starting place for what to bring. Some like to bring fancier equipment, and others don't. Hunting is a sport, so enjoy it your way. As long as you are safe and conservation minded, you shouldn't have any problems with anyone else. Enjoy the season, and good luck.
